Thanksgiving Nostalgia

Updated: Dec 27, 2020

Thanksgiving is one the most memorable times for Americans to express nostalgia and use those memories to make a meal memorable that might not have anything to do with taste. The traditions, the conversation, the familiar faces all have ways of making us feel a heightened emotion of joy.

There's certain things that just make sense. My mom making stuffing, my godparents bringing pumpkin pie, my brother cutting rutabagas and turnips, my other brother standing halfway in the living room and the kitchen during thanksgiving dinner watching football, and a dog somewhere scratching at a back door begging for some turkey dinner.

When I smell a turnip I think of thanksgiving, when I taste chunky mashed potatoes, thanksgiving, jimmy dean sausage..thanksgiving, any kind of canned fruit...thanksgiving. What I'm trying to say is whether you realize it or not, their can be non descriptive thanksgiving memories just by smells, sounds, sights alone, maybe not even taste. Which is crazy because all you do on this glorious day is eat. It's a perfect perfect day.

The sad thing is there's many people who aren't fortunate enough to celebrate a holiday like this surrounded by loving family or without the means to get all of these foods. And it hurts especially this year as many families will be isolated without loved ones or a bounty of foods. Give thanks and prayers this season as you are still on this earth and we can still help each other.

I'm here to request stories. I want to hear your best thanksgiving story, what makes it nostalgic, and why this is your favorite holiday and I will post it to the blog on Thanksgiving day. I hope everyone is well. I look forward to hearing from everyone. Best entry gets either a cooking demo or a 10 dollar starbucks gift card because pumpkin spice is life. Can't wait to hear them!
